Airlines are pushing for the resumption of transatlantic air traffic
The heads of Lufthansa and other major airlines have asked the US government and the EU Commission in a joint letter to enable air traffic between the USA and Europe to be resumed. The letter, which became known on Tuesday in Frankfurt am Main, proposes a coordinated, joint corona test program. On the other hand, quarantine requirements or entry restrictions should be dispensed with.
The test program should ensure safety and restore confidence in transatlantic air traffic, says the letter to US Vice President Mike Pence and EU Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson. For this, governments, businesses and citizens of the countries concerned would have to work together. In addition to Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, the signatories are also the CEOs of the US companies United and American Airlines as well as the IAG Group, which includes British Airways and Iberia.
The letter acknowledges that the resumption of air traffic and the associated test program "a number of challenges" would mean. On the other hand, however, nobody can be interested in keeping the important transatlantic aviation corridor closed. Therefore, solutions are required that guarantee health protection and safe passenger traffic alike, it said.

40,000 restaurants in Spain have to close
The corona pandemic has made deep cuts in the restaurant and bar landscape in Spain. According to the Spanish Gastronomy Association on Tuesday, around 40,000 bars, restaurants and hotels across the country had to permanently close due to missing guests during the crisis. This corresponds to about 13 percent of the gastronomic establishments in Spain. By the end of the year, the association expects the number of closed businesses to rise to 65,000.
On the Balearic Islands, including the holiday destination Mallorca popular with Germans, fewer than half of the bars and restaurants have reopened in the European Union even after the end of the border closings, the association said. In the major cities of the country, the industry is therefore also suffering from the absence of local guests, who instead take care of themselves at home because of the widespread home office. The hotel and catering industry is a central sector of the Spanish economy.
USA: Millions at risk of falling into poverty
On July 31, the government decided to expire the special payments for 32 million people who lost their jobs in the Corona crisis and cannot find work due to the economic slump. Without government support, many of those affected are at risk of social collapse.
The special payments were decided in April when the corona pandemic hit the United States and created millions of new unemployed every week. Since then, recipients have received an additional $ 600 per week. With the money, they can settle their bills and service loans, pay rent and buy groceries, according to Gary Burtless, economist at the Brookings Institution think tank, the AFP news agency.
Those affected are counting on President Donald Trump and Congress to agree on an extension of the aid. If this does not happen, not only could millions plunge into poverty, but the US economic recovery could also suffer a setback, analysts at Oxford Economics warn. The abolition of the special program would therefore cut the household incomes of the families concerned at least in half – with serious consequences for the domestic consumption-driven US economy. An extension of the special payments until the end of the year, on the other hand, would save a million existing jobs.
